Coronado is our most frequented campground. It is known as Silver Strand State Beach, and due to where we live, it is fairly quick for us to get to. We tend to do this campground as a last-minute camping trip when we can get a spot. The great thing about this campground is there are water and electric hookups, which are rare to find at state-run campgrounds.
This campground is an enclosed camper-only, so no tent camping is allowed. The sites are all fairly close together, but if you can get on the beach side, you have the sand starting right at the back of your RV. The beach is not as crowded because it is sandwiched right next to the Naval Base, which is private. There is also a large parking lot close should you have any friends or family who just want to visit for the day and enjoy the beach.
This campground is also gated, so although it’s secure, you must be back by a certain time at night to get into it. We usually bring our car because the city of Coronado is about 5 miles away and they have lots of great shops and eateries. You can also visit the infamous Hotel Del Coronado if you have never been.
If you are feeling adventurous, there is also a bike path that will take you from the campground to the city of Coronado, it is about 11 miles round trip on the bike.
Because this camping trip is usually last minute, we usually eat in town or get food to go and bring it back. It isn’t authentic camping but it does make for an easy trip! Below are some of our favorite places.
Buona Forchetta Garage – This Italian restaurant is delicious, and they have our favorite pizza in the San Diego area. Huge bonus if you are Gluten-free; my husband thinks it’s better than the regular crust. They also started serving brunch on the weekends at this location as well.
The Henry – We usually always go here for breakfast, it’s close, and they have a great selection of foods and coffees. The seating is open and outdoors.
Miguel’s – This is one of our go-to restaurants for takeout when we are camping. There are many options, and because of the pandemic, you can get margaritas to go now. Score!
