Edinburgh Days 1-3, Pitlochry Days 4-7, Isle of Skye Days 7-9.
We stayed in an Airbnb that was a great place right on the water. This accommodation had all the amenities for children and even a gate at the stairs which I appreciated. It was so nice to go on the water in the evening as the sun didn’t set in June until close to 11 pm. They left boots for people to wear as they can get muddy. I would highly recommend choosing accommodation on the Isle of Skye for getting around to see everything and this was a great option.
Airbnb: Waterside Cottage with Sea View
The Isle of Skye is also very remote, much like most of the highlands in Scotland. This was also a self-catering accommodation that had a kitchen. There was a small grocery store down the road and we also did much of our own cooking here as well. However, we did stop by these eateries ever so often.
Deli Gasta – This was a great little eatery in Broadford, Scotland where our rental was located. They had great coffee choices in the morning and breakfast options before heading out on your long treks across the Isle of Skye. They were very accommodating of my child’s needs and were friendly staff overall. They do close at 5 pm so keep this in mind for planning out dinner options.
Fish & Chips – Quite literally the name is what you get here. This is located in the city of Portree, Scotland on the Isle of Skye. Portree is a harbor town that is quite larger than any other city on the Isle and has many food options as well. Fish and chips were a must for us to try in Scotland and this came highly recommended. Word to the wise: Do not let the seagulls get your food, the locals will not be happy.
Eileen Donan Castle – This is a beautifully renovated castle that is in an ideal location upon your entrance to the Isle of Skye. It’s great for a quick stop to have a look around inside, and admire the scenery and there is a café to eat and have a drink at as well.
The Storr – This is a beautiful hike on the Isle of Skye, it was luckily a clear day when we did this hike and the scenery and view are worth the trek up the mountain. The climbing path is pretty steep and does get near vertical toward the top, however, there are many places you can stop at along the way and have just as good of a view without making it all the way up. We had the treat of someone singing and playing music somewhere on the mountain and it echoed through the area in a beautiful way.
The Fairy Pools – These were a little tricky for us to find at first so make sure your navigation is not trying to take you through a shortcut, lucky a runner led us on the right road. People had said these were a little overrated but we found them beautiful. The hike is easy and I thought it a perfect hike for children. We did bring the baby carrier but it is also a great place to let them run around and walk a little with you.
Fairy Glen – These are shorter hikes and walkers that are very doable with children. The topography is so interesting here and I highly recommend adding them to your Isle of Skye to-do list. A baby carrier or soft carrier would be best for this hike.
The Quiraing – This is a must-see if you are on the Isle of Skye. These consist of shorter walks and hikes that you can take depending on your comfort level. A hard or soft baby carrier would be recommended for this as a stroller will not allow you and your kids to take in all of this beauty.
