I am a pretty Type A person, and the idea of traveling with little humans whose top skill is to be unpredictable can be unnerving. These are some general things I tell myself before every trip, remind myself while on the trip, and are usually my advice to friends.
- Book everything that you need to function. For example, transportation, accommodations, and timing for when you leave a location and arrive at a new one. The rest is played by ear. Try not to book out every single day of your vacation with kids. Have a general list of things you want to see at that location and be moldable once you are there. One day might be a great day to visit a museum with our children, while on the other hand, it might be a great day to just find all the best parks in the city.
- As long as everyone is healthy and well, then things are going great. Adults sometimes get into bad moods on trips; don’t expect your children won’t as well. Tomorrow is a new day, or maybe just after nap time!
- You can buy it at your destination if you forget or lose anything. People are usually very helpful when it comes to children. Language apps are a massive plus if there is a language barrier and can get exactly what you need to say. My favorite is google translate, it does the job.
- Play on your children’s strengths. My youngest is a terror the longer the day goes on. I know if there is something I need him to be calmer for, it is best to do it bright and early.
- When all else fails let them run, or go back to your accommodations to let them play in the bath and reset.
May the odds be ever in your favor!
