“The hills are alive with the sound of music…”
Any Sound of Music fanatics among us? I definitely was and was so excited to visit Salzburg for this reason. But Austria is a hidden gem, both times we have seen Austria as a jumping point and not a base, and it always makes me want to go back and discover more of the country.
The Austrian landscape is absolutely beautiful, and the people are so nice; there is definitely a shift between the swiss conversations to the Austrians. The Austrians are much more open to having a random conversation with you and telling you about their favorite places or things.
We have been to Salzburg twice in 2014 on our honeymoon and again in 2021 with our kids. It is such a great city to explore, not too large that it feels unmanageable but not too small that you get bored. One thing I love about the city is that it always has felt so safe, and there is so much beauty everywhere you look.
In 2021, we also explored and stayed a few days in the capital of Vienna. There is so much history and a hub for world business that there is a lot to see and explore. This is a much larger city with much more going on than just tourism, but if you stay in a central location, you will be able to experience it all. The gardens and museums were all so grand, and you can even stumble across ancient roman ruins that make you reflect on how old this city is.
