It is strange when you return to someone again with children that you previously visited without. It makes you think you will need to change up many of your activities, but the great thing about Salzburg is we didn’t. Salzburg, like much of Europe, is another city that is extremely kid-friendly.
Both times we have taken the Fraulein Maria Bike Tours, and we have enjoyed them both so much. The first time was without kids, and I was actually excited to get the behind-the-scenes on the Sound of Music movie, my husband, not so much. What we found, though, was that this was an amazing way to see all of the city and get some behind-the-scenes places from locals who live there.
They have all types of different hook-ups for your children to join you on the tour, a bike trailer if they are young, a bike seat attachment if they are babies, tandem bikes, and junior bikes, depending on their skill level and age.
You get to go through the city, some festivals if they are happening, and the countryside where my husband even got to try milk from a cow farm. This tour was so much fun, and we always highly recommend it to anyone going to Salzburg.
This is a beautiful palace to visit should you have the time. If walking through palaces isn’t your thing, definitely check out the gardens; they are immaculate and beautiful. There are tons of places for your little ones to run around. They also have nice coffee bars or places to sit down and get a nice dessert or small meal.
After a day of sightseeing, we always seemed to wander here to let the kids be free and sit down for a little break.
There is so much to do and see around the old town of Salzburg, they have such unique stores, and nothing feels like a tourist trap; in fact, it feels hard to find tourist stuff in Salzburg. Everything is authentic, locally run, and one of a kind. I highly recommend checking out the Christmas in Salzburg store for some beautiful handpainted ornaments. These make great souvenirs from your trip or gifts as well. Every time I come back, I wish I had bought more (they ship!).
You will also find the Salburg Cathedral here; it was built in 774 and is quite a beautiful sight. It is a cathedral, so I try to keep my kids as quiet as possible, but there were no mad glares when my son decided to flex his vocal cords here and there. Behind here is the Petersfriedhof, an old monastery, and cemetery.
The natural history museum in Salzburg is a great stop for children. Many of their exhibits are hands-on, and the kids love to run around and try things, specifically in the science section.
Check out the farmer’s markets in Salzburg; it takes place in old town Salzburg, and if you can’t find it, just follow the crowds of people. There is amazing food at these, and our kids had a blast checking out all the treats and pretzel stands. It’s a great place to grab a meal so that you don’t have to keep the kids quiet.
